I don’t have paper towels in my kitchen, or new clothes in my armoire.
I try to eat real food and (hardly) never shop WalMart.
I hang my clothes on a line and learned to enjoy static cling.
And no matter what I do, it does not mean a single fucking thing.
I am a handful of lunatics, smoking herb, raising our voice. But.
My culture sees “going green” as a (strictly voluntary) choice.
I will not comply with greenwash bullshit.
I will not comply with seasonal fashion.
I will not comply that I’m too old to squeeze my legs in passion.
I will not comply with government raised chickens, children, and men.
I will not comply with television whispering lies into my head.
I am a handful of lunatics, smoking herb and raising our voice.
And even if we are silenced by machines and screams, we still make the right (compulsory) choice.
[...] Action Day 2009: Climate Change Jump to Comments Melina tweeted a couple of times this week about Blog Action Day, but the thought got lodged in the back [...]
I love your poem, Melina. Bravo! I have been to your home. I have eaten eggs laid by your chickens. I have seen your laundry hanging in the greenhouse to dry (or sitting on the couch to be folded!
). I have put food scraps in your compost bucket. I have wiped my hands with your cloth towels. I have witnessed how you live. You may be a handful of “lunatics,” but I believe you are effecting more change than you realize. Every person who visits the “ship,” who comes to visit your home, who knows you, who SEES how you live, and how you DON’T live, is touched. And each of those people’s kids are touched, and their friends, and maybe the friends of their friends, the children of their children. You are “being the change you want to see in the world.” After a visit to your home, maybe we don’t go home and toss our electric dryers on the front lawn, but maybe we stop using paper towels and paper plates; maybe we look into composting; maybe we start turning off the lights more often. You get my point. I get yours too. I just wanted to say that I believe living by example is powerful. I believe YOU and how you are living are powerful. I know I have been touched by you, your family, and how you live, and am grateful for it.
